Po-Cheng Tsai - Meetings and Classes with Great Choreographers

Po Cheng, TSAI, a professional dance artist, is the founder and current artistic director of B.DANCE. 

After graduating from Tsoying Senior High School, he went to Taipei National University of the Arts. During his university days, he got a scholarship to go to Purchase College, New York for exchange and learning. His works are often based on his own life experiences, perceptual, supplicated, but still humorous, with unique dance languages and treacherous and changeable styles. He often integrates theatres, dance, and extreme limb movements in his works.

From 2014 to 2019, he presented original works to the international dance community, making a significant mark in the field with his debut piece "Floating Flowers," which served as a milestone. He garnered high acclaim, receiving 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal from various choreography competitions worldwide. After returning to Taiwan, he founded his own dance company, B.DANCE. In 2016, he established the "B.OOM by B.DANCE" project, facilitating international performance collaborations by inviting renowned independent choreographers and dancers from Europe to Taiwan for performances and workshops. He has consistently endeavored to guide his team with innovative thinking and diverse perspectives, aiming to foster deeper dialogue between arts, education, and society. This is how he has contributed to our community through action. In 2018, the German magazine "tanz" named Tsai as one of the most promising young choreographers globally for 2017/2018. In 2019, he led his dance troupe to two major international arts festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Festival Off Avignon. In 2020, he was recognized as the "Best Emerging Choreographer" by the France National Board of Performance Arts, and in 2021, he was honored as one of Taiwan's "Ten Outstanding Young Persons.”

The masterclasses are designed as an opportunity for the participants to see and engage into the creative act of great choreographers who participate in the program of Sibiu International Theatre Festival. The masterclass has two dimensions: a brief presentation of the movement concepts used to create a performance and the practical one of experiencing the work methods.
