IS COMMERCIAL A DIRTY WORD? Interrogating Ethics, Hierarchies, and Unspoken Tensions of Producing

PANEL DISCUSSION / EVENTS 2026

About

Why does the word “commercial” carry a faint whiff of shame in a sector that depends on money to survive? This panel of producers and funding experts interrogates the unspoken hierarchies of arts financing — why inherited or extracted wealth, routed through a foundation, reads as “clean,” while income an artist earns directly from an audience can read as selling out. It asks how geography shapes what counts as acceptable money: the same model that is respectable in one country draws suspicion in another, and American earned-revenue and European subsidy each quietly look down on the other while envying its security.

The conversation presses on the sector’s discomfort with success itself. When a show becomes a commercial hit, why is the instinct to ask what was compromised rather than what was achieved? It weighs whether the romance of the struggling artist protects creators or simply dignifies their underpayment, and whether the producer — who carries the financial risk and absorbs the blame for thinking about money — has become the field’s necessary villain. As public funding shrinks, the panel confronts the hardest question: does the sector’s unease with commerce ultimately serve artists, or merely perpetuate their precarity?
